Exploring the Spectrum of Extended Reality

In recent years, technology has opened up new dimensions of human experience, blurring boundaries between physical and digital. Umbrella term, XR (Extended Reality), encompasses three technological advances; Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR), which offer varying levels of immersive experience.

VR as we know it utilises a device, such as headset or goggles, to create a whole new computerised environment, secluding the user from the real world. For example, the exciting Xfinity App with NBC Sports, providing VR coverage for sports during the Winter Olympics, offering a social and immersive experience where users can invite friends to a virtual suite. AR, however, utilises the real-world environment to enhance a consumers experience by contributing graphics, popular for sports or news. At the forefront of this technology and providing on screen graphics to major sports events, companies such as AE Live provide impressive AR solutions on a large scale.

MR comes in providing the blend of two worlds – physical and digital. A next generation process, combining camera tracking and real-time content to create a complete immersive virtual environment, visible live and shot direct by a camera. With the developments in these advancements and accessibility to the product, broadcasters have taken the opportunity to optimise their content and discover new ways of enhancing viewer experience.

As we watch the XR spectrum unfold at the forefront of the industry, there are some significant and exciting changes heading our way. Firstly, the evolving skill requirements from our clients and generation of new opportunities as demand grows for candidates who have the expertise to excel in the emerging landscape. Secondly, the adaption and training required for broadcasters and content creators to adopt XR technologies, as there are major workflow and infrastructure changes required. And lastly, at the forefront, the actual viewer experience. With endless new possibilities, the future looks exciting for immersive entertainment!
